God used to talk directly with the human race. The Bible provides multiple examples of these conversations. Is it still possible to talk to God today? The answer is a resounding yes!

You’re talking to God whenever you pray, but He’s also talking to you. He wants to talk to you because He loves you, and He promises to hear you and answer your prayers. But God wants more than to hear you talking at Him; He wants a two-sided relationship with you.

Throughout the Word of God, we see many examples of people who have a relationship with God. They talk, and God talks back. God wants to speak with you about your life. Think about that for a second—God, the maker of the heavens and earth, wants to talk to you about your life! Yet many people never give Him the opportunity. God will never force Himself on us; we must come to Him and ask Him to talk to us.

In John 4,  Jesus converses with a Samaritan woman at a well. We can learn a lot about God from this conversation.  The woman is there to draw water, and Jesus asks her for a drink.  This was unheard of! She is shocked that a Jew would ask a Samaritan for a drink, and He goes on to tell her that He has living water to offer her. The woman then asks Jesus for some of this living water. Let’s look at His response:

John 4:16-18 - Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”  The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”

Notice this woman asked Jesus for living water, and He began to speak truth into her life. He didn’t condemn her, but wanted to talk to her about things in her life.

When the conversation became uncomfortable, she tried to change the subject by talking about a religious tradition. He responded by saying that those traditions don’t matter; what matters is coming to God in truth.  John 4:24 - God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

So what can we learn from this interaction? First, when we come to God, we have to ask Him to talk to us and invite Him in. Second, when He starts talking to you about your life, remember He is a good God who loves you. He is not trying to condemn or make you feel bad about yourself.

God wants to speak truth into your life to make you a better person, more like Him. You have to be open and honest with God. If the conversation becomes uncomfortable, don’t try to avoid it; stay open, listen with your heart, and approach God with humility.

The Bible says God is for you and not against you (Romans 8:31). God desires to have a relationship with you, and when you talk, allow Him to respond. Relationships are not supposed to be one-sided.

Allow God to speak into your life.  When you read the Bible, a particular verse may come alive; God is speaking to you. Other times, He might bring a thought to your mind, something He has said to you, or something from His Word; these are all ways God speaks to us. It could also be through a sermon, or a word from a Christian friend or family member.

So, the next time you are in prayer, talking to God about all the things you need, stay there long enough for Him to speak to you. Wait for His response, you will be glad you did.

One last point: It’s essential to understand why you are able to talk with God. We can speak directly to Him because of what Jesus Christ did for us. When Jesus died on the cross, He removed the barrier between God and man. When you accept Jesus, the gap between you and God disappears, and you can talk to Him as you would a father.

The Bible says, “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most” (Hebrews 4:16). If you know Jesus, then confidently enter God’s throne room and share what’s on your mind.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for making a way for us to come to you. Father, I thank you that you love me and desire to speak to me.  Lord, help me talk to you about my needs and listen to what you say to my heart.  I desire not only to be a hearer of what you say but also to be a doer.  I want to listen and obey what you say.  Father, thank you for caring so much and speaking into my life.  I give you thanks and praise in Jesus' name, amen.
