One of my favorite passages of Scripture is the fourth chapter of the Book of Proverbs.
Proverbs 4:20-23 - My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.
The Word of God says that we must heed His words. It's interesting that in life, we make time for just about everything that we want to. Yet when you talk to people about spiritual things, they always have some excuse for not reading their Bible, praying, or going to church.
We must give God time in our lives and make Him a priority. We will not change or grow spiritually unless we do. When you spend time with Him, He can talk to you about things in your life. This can cause a shift in your priorities, change your heart, and give you another perspective.
Throughout our lives, we have moments where we reevaluate what's important. I remember the days after 9/11, when people began to rethink what was important. They started praying more, appreciating their loved ones more, etc. Even now, during our uncertain times, people are rediscovering what is truly important and changing their priorities.
You do not need to wait for a tragic event to happen. God's Word can help you see things clearly and give you a proper perspective. Give God some time today. Attend to His Word; it is life and health to you!
John 14:13-14 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
Throughout the Scriptures, God encourages us to ask for things in prayer. We often have the wrong idea of prayer; we think we go to God to get something from Him. You do not have to be clever or have eloquent words to convince God to do something for you; He wants to. Asking was God's idea to begin with. He was the one who said to ask and that He would give.
Ask God to do great things in your life today and in the lives of those around you. Today, spend some time “attending to His Word,” which simply means giving the Bible your attention. Allow God to speak to you about your life, take time to get to know God, and enjoy His company.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you that when I focus on your word, it is life and health to me. Help me prioritize your Word. Help me realize what is truly important in my life. Thank you. When I ask for something in prayer according to your word, you will do what you said and give it to me. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
