The Bible tells us in Hebrews 10:25—not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

Attending a weekly church service holds great value. While our schedules are often packed, and life feels hectic, especially at certain times of the year, the truth is, we prioritize what matters most to us. Making time for God and church often requires saying "no" to other things.

In today’s fast-paced culture, it can be tempting to think, “I’ll just watch a church service online or on TV.” While that may seem convenient, it’s not the same as actively participating in a local church community, nor does it align with what scripture calls us to do. God’s design for His people includes gathering together in fellowship and worship.

Before exploring the reasons why attending church is so important, let’s consider some of the reasons people choose not to go. Growing up, attending church on Sunday wasn’t optional in my family—it was simply part of life. That foundation taught me its importance and shaped my understanding of faith.

It’s easy to find countless reasons not to attend church. Let’s take a moment to examine some of the more common ones:

  • My schedule is packed.
  • I feel too worn out.
  • The winter weather makes it difficult to go outside.
  • I don’t connect with the preacher or their style of teaching.
  • I don't understand the value of attending.
  • Work commitments prevent me from going.
  • I can watch the service online instead.
  • I can read and study the Bible on my own using online tools.
  • Church services feel uninteresting to me.
  • I’ve been hurt or let down by church members in the past.
  • I disagree with the church’s leadership or direction.
  • I don't feel welcome there.
  • My spiritual needs aren't being fulfilled.

Let’s be honest; this list could go on and on. Here’s the truth: church isn’t about you—it’s about God. It’s about worshiping Him and showing love and service to the people He loves. I understand that some reasons for not attending church may feel valid, and I don’t dismiss those feelings. However, let’s shift the focus and look at the many benefits of being part of a church community.

Why Going to Church is Good for You: Regular church attendance offers numerous physical, spiritual, and emotional benefits. Studies have shown that people who believe in God and have active spiritual lives tend to be healthier, and I think this is because we were created for worship (Isaiah 43:21).

Regular church attendance can:

  1. Reduces Stress
Regular church attendance can improve mental health by reducing anxiety, worries, and fears. While challenges still arise, focusing on God’s presence brings hope and peace.
  2. Provide Companionship
Church offers a community of friends, mentors, and fellow believers. Regular attendance helps you build meaningful, godly relationships with like-minded people.
  3. It opens up opportunities to use your gifts
God gives every believer spiritual gifts (1 Peter 4:10), and the church provides a place to use them. Your unique gift is essential to strengthening the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:7).
  4. Offer and Receive Encouragement
During difficult times, a church family offers support and reminds you of God’s eternal promises. Life’s trials are temporary, preparing us for eternal glory (2 Corinthians 4:17).

Finally, let’s not forget the greatest benefit of all—Jesus. The church teaches us about God and helps us grow in our relationship with Him. Through its programs and ministries, we learn how to study the Bible, pray, and deepen our faith. By attending, you become a part of Christ's living, breathing body.

Attending church regularly and being an active part of the body honors God. Commit to staying connected and attending church, no matter what else is going on.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you for all that you have given me. Lord, help me prioritize my relationship with you. I thank you for always being there and constant in my life, and I pray that I, too, will be faithful to you. In Jesus' name, I pray, amen.
